The first time I received acupuncture, I cried on the bus the whole way home, wondering "Is this how everyone else has been feeling, this whole time?"
It was like someone had put the key into my body and finally turned it on; for the very first time, I felt like I was A L I V E. I was 22 and suddenly knew there was so much more in store for me. On that bus ride home, I started to grieve for all the life I had already missed to feeling exhausted and depressed, living with chronic health issues that doctors told me were "normal," "not a big deal," or "can't be helped."
I am alive only because of the pharmaceuticals that kept me going in childhood...but I'm well thanks to all that came after.
My first acupuncture session shattered and expanded my vision for what was possible for my health. I started exploring, trying what felt like every modality, eating philosophy, and approach to healing. At first, I thought I was just healing my body, but instead my entire life started to shift course and evolve — my work in the environmental policy realm no longer felt totally aligned, relationships either shifted deeper or fell away, and eventually, when it was time to start over completely, I found myself in acupuncture school. I learned that healing my body is the same thing as healing my life, and vice versa, as it is all connected.
Through all the healing modalities I benefitted from, I found nothing as flexible, applicable, or artfully simple as East Asian medicine. It is a beautifully comprehensive system that supports integrated healing across all the levels of our experience — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Later, I encountered energy healing, which was profoundly restorative to my nervous system, and later still, breathwork meditation, which offered emotional, relational, and spiritual healing in a time when nothing else was connecting, and, side bonus, completed the healing of my lifelong asthma.
I treat my business as a living, evolving experiment in how I can be of deep service to you, and how we can have fun doing it. And since I can guide you as far as I've gone myself, my healing arts practice is a reflection of my commitment to my own health; I keep doing my own practical, mysterious, fun, sometimes ho-hum, sometimes elusive and frustrating, everyday self-healing work so that I can help you do yours. Just like you, I am a work in progress human, curious about what else is possible, what more I’m ready to learn and see about myself, what's beyond the layer I'm peeling back today.
I love to share what I've learned and experienced with you, because your healing is my healing, and we are in this together.
“That sounds nice, but what do you actually do?”
I offer acupuncture treatments and herbal consultations at my practice in Manhattan / Flatiron. I also support people in person and anywhere (using Skype or Zoom) with breathwork and Healing Touch. I teach classes, lead breathwork groups in Brooklyn / Manhattan and online, and collaborate with other practitioners from time to time.
I do a lot of things that most people are not familiar with, and am aware that might be confusing. I draw upon these tools because they each arrived for me at the perfect moment, and unlocked levels of physical and emotional health and aliveness that nothing else had before. They each shifted my life so much that I couldn't help but learn more about them and how to use them...no matter how mysterious they seemed to others.
While acupuncture, herbs, breathwork, and Healing Touch all access and address the same root issues, they work through different levels of our physical, emotional, and energetic patterns. I think of them as different doors and windows into the same house.
Working together in NYC and Anywhere
I haven't come across a fixed formula for how to support people, because, well, people are different. I get to practice an individually tailored medicine, so how we might work together would depend on what you're needing. Working together may look something like :
A course of 4-10 weekly acupuncture treatments, which is often a good fit for acute issues or flareups of chronic issues
Weekly sessions, alternating between acupuncture and Healing Touch, which are a good fit for healing from chronic stress and exhaustion, as well as ongoing physical or emotional pain
A series of 10 Healing Touch or Breathwork sessions, spaced according to your needs, for ongoing support to dig in and get to the roots of the challenges that are coming up in your life
4-7 acupuncture treatments starting around week 36 of pregnancy, in preparation for labor and delivery
Because sustainable healing happens when you are doing lots of little supportive things for yourself throughout each day, I often include food, lifestyle, supplement, herbal, and creative practice suggestions in our work, as appropriate.
Sometimes I write about health and healing on Instagram (@alignnewyork). And if you’re interested in supporting yourself and your family at home, using a surprisingly effective low-tech tool based on East Asian medicine, please check out my book, Seed Heal Now, which tells you everything you need to know to start using ear seeds today.
