You may know that I recently started a year-long mentorship in Healing Touch, a gentle, noninvasive energy therapy which uses light touch to influence the biofield and human energy system, facilitating the body's relaxation and self-healing response. I first received Healing Touch 2 years ago, when my acupuncturist used some of the techniques during a treatment; afterwards, I felt so deeply restored and at peace that I needed to know exactly what she had done and how I could learn more about it. Thanks to synchronicity, I found myself in my first weekend-long Healing Touch training just 3 days later, and I've been working toward my certification in Healing Touch ever since.
Not surprisingly, in most circles, energy medicine is perceived as even more at the fringe than acupuncture. I've been asked variations of this understandable question many times already: "You already have a doctorate degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine; why spend your time doing something so woo-woo?"
My response is simple : different people respond to different healing methods (and there's nothing that always works for everyone), so why not be able to offer a well-researched gentle technique that has practically no contraindications or side effects, yet is incredibly effective for many common health conditions, according to the clinical research? While many people benefit greatly from acupuncture and herbs, some people are just not comfortable with needles, or are unable to use herbal medicine due to their lifestyles, current health conditions, or prescription medications. With only my Chinese medicine tools, I've been unable to be of service to these people, and I am passionate about continually expanding my skills and offerings to support a wider range of people in their healing process.
Hands-on healing is the oldest medicine in the world, and there is an increasing amount of clinical research that demonstrates how touch is necessary and beneficial for all levels of health. In the most basic sense, Healing Touch, which is similar to reiki or Therapeutic Touch, facilitates the body's relaxation and self-healing response. When in a state of relaxation, our bodies are able to self-heal, whether our current challenges are on the level of body/mind/spirit, or all three! The extensive quantitative research shows that Healing Touch techniques can do the following:
- Reduce pain
- Reduce anxiety, tension, stress, and fatigue
- Reduce hospital length of stay
- Improve immune function in cancer patients
- Ease effects of trauma and PTSD
There are a number of other suggested benefits that have not yet been studied quite as extensively, including improving sleep quality; preventing illness; enhancing a sense of spiritual connection; and providing support during chronic illness, medical interventions, and the dying process. In my experience, Healing Touch is an especially supportive complement during significant life changes (moving, loss, change of job, change of family structure) or chronic illness, and for those struggling with the all-too-common New Yorker constellation of stress/anxiety/depression/insomnia. Healing Touch is also a great option for those who are highly sensitive, when even an acupuncture treatment is a bit too intrusive, and for women who are pregnant or postpartum, and are minimizing any drugs or medical interventions.
The Healing Touch techniques were synthesized and developed by a pioneering holistic nurse, and they are commonly used in hospitals and integrative healthcare institutions across the US and beyond. In addition, Healing Touch has a long and rigorous certification program, and is the first energy medicine to offer accredited certification through the NCCA. This accreditation provides value and accountability to the public by affirming that the program has achieved an objective standard of excellence, and ensuring that certified practitioners meet standard knowledge and skills levels.
Over the next year, I'll be giving over 100 hour-long Healing Touch sessions, offered separately from my usual Chinese medicine services. I'll have regular support and input from my mentor throughout the year, to learn from her long experience with healing, and to deepen my technical, clinical, and intuitive skills. While I'll continue to incorporate a bit of Healing Touch and reiki techniques into my acupuncture treatments, I will be be using them primarily in their own dedicated sessions, at least for a while, so my clients can benefit from the incredible transformation that is possible with regular Healing Touch sessions. Also: my hour-long Healing Touch sessions will be offered for only $60, about half of my usual rate!
